The air was thick with the smell of wool, tobacco, and boiled coffee. Many had worked the overnight shift at the Amoskeag Mills, one of the largest textile factories in the world. Their calloused hands and weary faces told the story of twelve-hour days, low wages, and the constant worry of how to feed their families.
